Daily experiences are often complex and sometimes overwhelming. Blessed with a life that involves family, and a career that allows for challenges and opportunities for growth, I am in search for the moments of pause in the ongoing chaos, this is the subject of my work.
Botanicals sit in front of patterns selected from life’s observations. The patterns are rich in color, complementary and conflicted, and layered to enhance recollections of celebration and struggle. They are the playground for experimentation to expose the depth of the compositional space between the central subject and the time that is pressed up against them. They are graphic by design and allow for movement across the page. Using drawings and photographic layers in the printmaking medium, I am afforded the opportunity to create limited editions through repetition and explore alterations for singularly distinct works.
The blooms call for the focus of each composition. Each one selected as a representation of a single moment or relationship, they offer an escape of time allowing me to research topics that are scientific, historical and familial in nature. I treasure the opportunity to get lost in linguistic translations, learn of geographical native and invasive species, gather information about medical and climate research, and better understand historical events and cultural movements that can be associated to each. Connecting these findings to my personal life evokes both humility and exhilaration at the world yet unexplored.
